Dear tomato lovers,
If you are here, is because you bought a jar of the ancient Re Fiascone tomato sauce from Pizzeria NO.900. Their team uses this special tomato with love, making some of their pizzas and bringing to you the real flavors of Italy. Aside from the great taste, there is much more behind this unique red fruit: a beautiful environmental project that is safeguarding a UNESCO site such as the Amalfi Coast and promoting sustainable development of the region.
When purchasing this jar, you are helping to protect the local biodiversity and landscape of the delicate environment of the Amalfi Coast. The Re Fiascone tomato you have in your hands comes from terraced fields that were once abandoned, and brought back to life, thanks to NO.900’s commitment and our collaboration with local farmers.
As inspiration for cooking this special tomato sauce, have a look at our video about a recipe for “Pizza fritta”, fried pizza, from Naples and the mountain regions around Naples!

History of the project
The Re Fiascone tomato is an ancient variety from the 19th century, which is originally named “Re Umberto” in honor of King Umberto I from Savoia. It was cultivated in the area around Naples for generations, but unfortunately, with the development of industrial production of tomatoes in the 1900s, new more productive varieties caused the seeds of Re Fiascone to gradually disappear or get mixed. Re Fiascone was lost for many years… but not in Tramonti, one of the valleys of the Amalfi Coast.
In this special land between the mountains, located in an UNESCO World Heritage site, 13 villages became the “guardians” of the Re Fiascone seeds, and kept cultivating it since the 1900s. These seeds were given to local association ACARBIO to distribute them, to protect the local biodiversity and keep the ancient tradition.
In the last decades, there has been a decline in cultivation of the terraces of the Amalfi Coast, mainly because of the high effort and low industrialization possible in terrace cultivation. In this context the “Save the terraces” project is born, and here the support of you and Pizzeria NO.900 becomes necessary to preserve the local heritage, giving the farmers a renewed hope to re-connect with their land and traditions.
